Symptoms
Persistent Cough
As many as 1 in 5 people have a persistent cough which may not have a specific cause. This can, in some cases, be exhausting especially if it is disturbing sleep. A Cough is a reflex reaction to something that is irritating the airways. A persistent cough is the body exaggerating its response to an irritant in the airways, if it’s persistent it’s putting the body under a lot of stress. Coughs lasting under three weeks tend to be caused by viral infections. If your cough is lasting more than three weeks it is putting your immune system under a significant amount of stress.
Cillia are little hairs in your airways that clear debris in your lungs, but sometimes they aren’t functioning correctly. Quite often you might have a minuscule obstruction in your airways, like a grain of pollen or small particles of dust, that is stuck in the Cillia. A persistent cough is often your body trying to get rid of it. At Breathing Coach we support you through appropriate breathing exercises to get these Cillia working correctly to dispel any irritant in the airways, therefore the irritant is gone, and so is your persistent cough.
If there is no intervention, your symptoms are likely to worsen to a stage where you need medical intervention when suffering from shortness of breath, chest pain or you may even begin to cough up blood.
Long Covid
It is becoming clear from ongoing evidence and patient testimonials that many of those who contracted Covid 19 are finding it hard to shake off the effects months after falling ill. The World Health Organisation now believes that 50% of covid sufferers will have symptoms that last up to six months. You may be experiencing residual effects that are difficult to clear, such as fever, cough, fatigue, loss of smell, difficulty breathing, shivering, body aches, wheezing, headaches, sore throat, joint pain, confusion, dizziness, disturbed sleep patterns, digestion problems.
The reality of Long Covid is your body is trying to recover after having its immune system shocked, and it’s taking the time. Many people tell us that the biggest problem for them is their increased physical and mental fatigue.
Your breathing affects your immune response and if you are over-breathing it causes stress on your body. This means that your body is more vulnerable to the symptoms of Long Covid. This is often unique to each individual and it may be exaggerating problems you were experiencing before Covid. We liken it to driving with a wheel spin, it’s causing a lot of stress on the driving system. We will bring the ‘driving’ back to normal, so you can ‘drive normally’ again and get back on the path to a swift recovery.
At Breathing Coach, we can support you to reprogramme your breathing. This resets your breathing back to normal, but it also resets your immune system. This means you can recover much faster. It’s important that you support your body in the healing process and minimise the chance of long term issues.
